Job DescriptionSalary: 45k-65kL2 Cyber Solutions is seeking a
junior system administrator for one of our clients at the National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). This position will
directly support the National Centers for Environmental Information
(NCEI), located in Boulder, CO. NCEI is the Nation's leading
authority for environmental data, and manages one of the largest
archives of atmospheric, coastal, geophysical, and oceanic research
in the world. NCEI contributes to the broader NOAA mission by
developing new products and services that span the science
disciplines, while enabling better data discovery. Since this is an
entry-level position, candidates are not expected to fully meet all
of the following criteria, but must be willing to learn new skills
and grow into the position.Responsibilities include, but are not
limited to
- Act as a technical liaison representing the IT division to
other divisions within NCEI, as well as to external groups, provide
system status briefings, and documenting meeting outcomes
- Perform daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and
availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key
processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying
completion of scheduled jobs such as backups
- Linux and Windows admin responsibilities for client endpoints
and servers (scanning, patching, backups, troubleshooting,
scripting automation, etc.)
- Maintain system software (Windows Server 2016/2019/2022 and
Windows 10), including patching and upgrading
- Creating volumes, assigning to servers, and remote
replication
- Deploy, configure, secure, manage, and monitor devices and
client applications in an enterprise environment, including
managing identity, access, policies, updates, and applications
- Investigate and analyze feasibility of system requirements and
develop system architectures and specifications to meet those
requirements
- Evaluate and specify equipment for purchase, write up
justifications and provide supporting documentation for the
procurement process
- Install new / rebuild existing servers and configure hardware
(including virtual systems), peripherals, services, settings,
directories, storage, etc. in accordance with standards and
project/operational requirements
- Manage network infrastructure, including configuring switches
and firewalls
- Tune system performance and ensure high availability of
infrastructure via replication, clustering, and failover
strategies
- Manage equipment inventory, including tracking current system
inventory and retiring obsolete equipment
- Maintain system hardware, including swapping parts, managing
returns, rebuilding filesystems, escorting third-party maintenance
personnel, and coordinating and communicating with impacted
constituencies
- Ensure information technology compliance with national and
agency IT standards, especially the NIST Risk Management Framework
- assist cybersecurity personnel with technical artifact collection
and system explanations
- Install STIG benchmarks and conduct Nessus security scans
- Respond to user problems via a Jira Service Desk ticketing
system
- Respond to IT related agency requests and mandates
- Update system documentation and SOPs
- Responsibilities may occasionally require working evenings and
weekends, sometimes with little advance notice for any required
physical troubleshootingRequired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Bachelor's degree in a related technology field - preferably
computer science
- A+ certification
- At least one system admin certification (RHCSA, MS Windows
admin cert, etc)
- Experience with or knowledge of programming languages and
operating systems; current equipment and technologies, enterprise
backup and recovery procedures, system performance-monitoring
tools, active directories, virtualization, HTTP traffic, content
delivery, and caching
- Install and maintain server application software, including
Apache and Tomcat, relational database systems including
PostGreSQL, and data delivery services including THREDDS and ESRI
Geoportals
- Expertise in creating, analyzing, and repairing large-scale
distributed systems
- Monitor systems to ensure that they are operating within
expected parameters, using tools such as Cacti, DiskCheck, Nagios,
Icinga and ability to develop custom scripts
- Download, review, build (as RPMs), install, and configure open
source scientific and user productivity software
- Develop software to support system operations, using scripting
languages such as Powershell, Bash, Perl, Python, etc.
- Implement backup, media management, and recovery
procedures
- Ability to lift at least 50 lbsPreferred Qualifications
- Proven work experience in IT, including internships
- Knowledge of Unix system administration (CentOS and Red Hat) -
hybrid OS admin skills are highly preferred
- Cloud computing knowledge and skills - preferably in AWS and
Azure
- Networking knowledge and skills
- Demonstrated interest in IT and desire to grow - home lab is
highly preferred
- Ability to travel (less than 5%, if any) Additional Information
