Job Description

The National Wind Technology Center has a full-time researcher position for high-fidelity modeling and high-performance computing. This position will be at NREL's Flatirons Campus located near Boulder, CO (see https://www.nrel.gov/flatirons-campus/).

The Researcher will be part of a large multi-lab team that has funding through the DOE Office of Science/NNSA ExaWind Exascale Computing Project and DOE Wind Energy Technologies Office projects. The primary codes used in these projects make up the open-source ExaWind software stack, which includes Nalu-Wind, an unstructured-grid, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code, AMR-Wind, a structured-grid CFD code built on AMReX, and the OpenFAST turbine simulation code. The Researcher will be a key team member in expanding the ExaWind codes, which were developed primarily for land-based wind turbines and wind farms, for offshore wind, especially for floating-platform dynamics. In addition to code and model development, the researcher will be expected to use those tools on DOE supercomputers to address the pressing science and engineering challenges in an effort to enable cost effective offshore wind energy extraction. The Researcher is expected to have broad expertise in computational mechanics, especially in the area of computational fluid dynamics, and in the physics of offshore wind. The Researcher will be expected to communicate results through peer-reviewed journal publications and conference presentations.

Basic Qualifications

PhD in Applied Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.

Or, Master's Degree in Applied Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, or related field, and 3 or more years of relevant experience.

Or, Bachelor's Degree in Applied Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, or related field, and 5 or more years of relevant experience.

Additional Required Qualifications

The position requires a (1) PhD in applied mathematics, aerodynamics, mechanical engineering, or equivalent, (2) at least one year of postdoctoral experience, (3) experience in incompressible-flow computational fluid dynamics (CFD), (4) evidence of broad knowledge of numerical methods used in CFD, (5) established publication record in peer-reviewed journals, (6) evidence of expertise in modern software engineering (e.g., version control, automated testing) and C++, (7) evidence of ability to work effectively in a team environment, and (8) strong oral and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge and experience in:

  1. Computational methods for multi-phase fluid dynamics (e.g., volume of fluid)

  2. Immersed boundary methods

  3. Physics relevant to floating offshore wind, including the dynamics of the marine boundary layer

  4. AMReX block-structured adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) library

  5. Trilinos and/or hypre solver libraries

  6. Code development for modern high-performance computing including GPU-accelerated systems and experience with CI workflows especially for targeting multiple GPU backends

  7. Building code on top of C++ abstraction libraries and familiarity with C++14, C++17 standards.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Annual Salary Range: $73,900 - $133,100

Offers will typically be made in the bottom half of the listed range. NREL takes into consideration a candidate's education, training, and experience, as well as the position's work location, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee's salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
