Job Description

NREL is seeking a senior researcher to design, optimize, and analyze wind and hybrid power plants for the grid of the future. This will feature integration of technologies such as wind, solar, storage, and the grid. The researcher will develop novel optimization and control strategies as well as integrated technology models for designing and operating hybrid systems.

The researcher will need to deploy large-scale strategies such as scalable discrete optimization for design and distributed optimization and controls to operate these plants in real-time. The researcher will use a variety of simulation tools including, HOPP (Hybrid Optimization and Performance Platform), WISDEM (Wind-Plant Integrated Systems Design and Engineering Model), SAM (System Advisory Model), and OpenDSS (an electric power distribution system simulator).

This researcher is expected to demonstrate a broad understanding and wide application of engineering principles, theories and concepts as well as general knowledge of wind energy related disciplines and applications. The researcher will work with a variety of customers including the US Department of Energy wind energy technology office. They will also work collaboratively with other national laboratories, industry and the international community and execute wind energy related engineering projects worldwide.

The successful candidate will have excellent writing, interpersonal and communication skills. The candidate will be expected to help publish results in technical journals/conference proceedings and present work at conferences, symposia, and sponsor review meetings. They will also be expected to support the development of new work proposals, preparations, and reviews.

Basic Qualifications
Relevant PhD . Or, relevant Master's Degree and 3 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 5 or more years of experience . Demonstrates broad understanding and wide application of engineering technical procedures, principles, theories and concepts in the field. General knowledge of other related disciplines. Demonstrates leadership in one or more areas of team, task or project lead responsibilities. Demonstrated experience in management of projects. Very good writing, interpersonal and communication skills.

Additional Required Qualifications

  • The preferred candidate will have experience with wind and wind-based hybrid energy system design and multi-disciplinary optimization.
  • The preferred candidate will have experience with energy modeling tools used within the wind industry e.g. HOPP, WISDEM, SAM, OpenDSS, and have experience with the FORTRAN, C++ and Python programming languages and be comfortable working in high performance computing environments.
  • The preferred candidate will be familiar with distributed optimization and controls.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)
    Annual Salary Range: $73,900 - $133,100

    Offers will typically be made in the bottom half of the listed range. NREL takes into consideration a candidate's education, training, and experience, as well as the position's work location, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee's salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
