Job Description:
Job Description Summary: Under minimal supervision, performs
routine service, preventative maintenance and major repair work on
fire apparatus, fire suppression equipment and support vehicles.
Exercises independent judgment in diagnosing, repairing and
performing maintenance tasks. Performs related duties as required.
Job Description: JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITES Performs maintenance,
repair work and training on fire apparatus, fire suppression
equipment and support vehicles and other Fleet vehicles as
assigned. This includes the following, but is not limited to the
following: Repairs and maintains hydraulics; brakes and air brakes;
anti-lock brake system (ABS); gas and diesel engines; advanced
electrical and on board computers; fuel delivery; transmissions;
air systems; exhaust; axles and suspension; fire pumps; foam
systems and aerial apparatus. Assists with annual testing programs
for fire pumps; aerial ladder equipment and emissions for fire
department Fleet. Assists with performing and maintaining records
for National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) fire equipment
tests and apparatus testing. Performs oil changes, preventive
maintenance, and safety checks on emergency response vehicles. May
perform welding and fabrication of steel and aluminum for body
repairs and fire apparatus refurbishment. Must be able to drive all
department fire apparatus/vehicles in order to test drive for
diagnosis after pick-up and delivery of equipment. Responds to
emergency scenes outside the fleet maintenance facility in all
weather conditions to perform fire apparatus/vehicles services as
needed on an on-call basis. Repairs regular fleet vehicles in the
absence of needed fire repairs, and must be available for emergency
snow shift Completes or updates related paperwork such as work
orders, equipment/vehicle history jackets, and equipment/vehicle
parts records. Uses required personal protective equipment. May be
required to work weekends, evenings, holidays, and overtime,
Standby and / or in response to emergencies as required. Updates
job knowledge as computer-controlled systems and new technology is
introduced by attending training courses as required. Other:
Performs related duties as required to meet the needs of the city.
Takes proper safety precautions to prevent accidents. Responsible
for the safety of self, others, materials, and equipment. Uses all
required safety equipment and follows all safety regulations,
policies and procedures. Reports all accidents and damage to city
property. Responsible for knowing and complying with all city and
department Policies; participating in professional trainings and
development; and adhering to attendance and workplace attire
policies. REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS High school diploma or
equivalent. At least two years of "on the job" experience working
as a mechanic in a formal automotive repair facility. Specialized
knowledge of automotive test equipment, including computerized test
devices; proficiency in the use of gas and arc welding equipment,
machining tools, and related mechanic tools; strong mechanical
aptitude; knowledge of maintenance and parts manuals, as
demonstrated by completion of applicable training courses. Ability
to obtain a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within
six (6) months of hire. Automotive Service Excellence (ASE)
certification in automotive, heavy truck, or emergency
vehicle/apparatus. Documented certification to inspect and maintain
fire apparatus as set forth by the National Fire Protection Agency
(NFPA). Valid driver's license. Have and maintain acceptable motor
vehicle record and criminal history. Certification in proper
recycling of CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons). State Emissions Inspector
License. Ability to pass a pre-employment physical. Ability to
stand, kneel, and bend frequently and for extended periods of time;
and ability to work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions
and in unpleasant conditions where air contamination, vibration,
noise, inclement weather, unclean conditions, confined space, and
potentially dangerous heights exist. Upper body strength to lift
and carry items weighting up to 50 pounds. Willingness and ability
to work alternate shift schedules, irregular hours, extended shift
hours, weekends, evenings, holidays, and/or emergencies as
required. Ability to work independently as well as harmoniously
with other employees. Willingness and ability to use personal
protective equipment as required. Ability to follow all applicable
OSHA regulations. Ability to obtain basic first aid and CPR
certifications and forklift operator certification within three (3)
months of hire. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS Associate's Degree in
Automotive and/or Diesel Technology or an equivalent. Valid Class A
commercial driver license (CDL). WORKING CONDITIONS In addition to
the qualifications listed in the required minimum qualification
section. Phvsical and Mental Effort : Ability to perform a wide
range of strenuous physical and manual tasks in both outdoor and
indoor environments. Physical ability to stand, walk, and kneel.
Ability to use a variety of long handled, manual, and power tools;
and to operate equipment while working in and around other
activities and moving vehicles. Upper body strength to lift up to
30 pounds on a daily basis and over 50 pounds on an occasional
basis. Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other
communication capabilities that permits the employee to communicate
effectively on the telephone and in person. Sufficient vision or
other powers of observation that permits the employee to review,
evaluate and prepare a variety of written documents and materials,
and to operate automotive test equipment and related mechanic
equipment. Sufficient manual dexterity that permits the employee to
operate automotive test equipment and related mechanic equipment,
computer equipment and other office equipment. Sufficient personal
mobility and physical reflexes, which permits the employee to work
in an automotive repair facility and outdoors. Ability to work
under stress from demanding deadlines and changing priorities and
conditions. Work Environment : Ability to work in an office and
indoor shop environment as well as in the outdoors year-round in a
variety of weather conditions, including an exposure to noise, air
contamination, and vibration. Works in a setting subject to
continuous interruptions and background noises. Machines and
equipment used include, but are not limited to the following :
Standard office equipment including personal computers, telephones,
calculators and copy/fax machines. Assorted precision and
non-precision hand tools and power tools. Welding equipment,
computerized engine control systems, diagnostic equipment, air
conditioning diagnosis / service unit, vehicle lifts, overhead
